Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC)The Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) carries out research and develops technology in the field of energy and its production, transformation, transport, distribution and use, with a particular focus on technologies to facilitate transition to a new, more sustainable energy model, especially technologies that promote energy efficiency and savings, and technologies to produce and use clean and renewable energies.

IREC’s mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of Catalan society and the competitiveness of its businesses via innovation and the development of new technological products, medium- and long-term research, and the development of scientific and technical knowledge in the field of energy.

The institute’s activities focus on two areas:

A market-oriented approach involving the development of technologies, new products and new solutions for companies in the energy sector.
Long-term research and the generation of knowledge within the institute’s groups and units, which may have commercial applications for the industry in the long term.
The institute’s approach can be defined as the balance between these two lines of work.

Materials for Energy Labs

The Materials for Energy Labs have fully equipped laboratories for the synthesis and characterization of a wide variety of materials, and for the manufacturing and testing of energy conversion and storage devices. IREC is a center of excellence in the field of energy including, among others, photovoltaic energy, electrochemical and chemical energy storage, the generation of synthetic fuels, hydrogen and fuel cells and hence, the Materials for Energy Labs provide valuable support to various academic and industrial entities of public and private nature in various fields of research and development.

Energy Smart Lab

The Energy Smart Lab offers an experimental and testing platform for technology development and testing in a flexible environment. It. can develop and test prototypes in the fields of smart grids and micro-grids, renewable energy sources and electric mobility integration and control, energy storage applications and energy management conceived.

SEILAB – Semi-Virtual Energy Integration Lab

SEILAB provides advanced expertise to assess the development and integration of renewable energy solutions and innovative thermal and electrical equipment that are designed to improve energy efficiency in buildings and energy systems Operation of air conditioning and thermal equipment in buildings based on a semi-virtual test approach, which allows testing equipment in real conditions based on a virtual model of dynamic building. SEILAB offers short-term feedback improvement cycles for equipment development, rapid determination of seasonal performance factor (SPF), testing / optimization of innovative control devices and strategies for regulation, evaluation and testing of hybrid energy systems , tests in extreme operating conditions and climatic tests

2020-07-013 - POWERCOAT - Nanostructured fabrics for high performing flexible thermoelectric power generator

This technology is a revolutionary new high-performing cost effective and environmentally friendly thermoelectric material. The approach centers around nano-enabled easy-to handle flexible fabrics made of thin-walled microtubes. The fabric-like thermoelectrics adapt to any hot surfaces (such as round chimneys, unlike conventional flat batteries or TEGs), leading to a high performance and mechanical properties. In addition, the capacity of mass-production of TEG fabrics at low-cost provides access to new markets.

2016-01-014 - Low-EMiSSiOnS - Low-Cost and Efficient Miniaturized Solid-state Silicon-based Oxygen Sensors

A customizable micro-fabricated zirconia-based sensor which provides a fast and stable response to different oxygen concentrations. It comprises a nanometric membrane and self-heating elements, everything integrated in less than 1 cm . Microfabrication techniques, added to the know-how of the group, allow to adapt the design of the sensor to any space constraint.
