Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB)Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) is a public centre, part of the MAR Health Park, which for the last 20 years has conducted scientific research in the field of biomedicine and health sciences as well as training qualified researchers in these areas. The centre is associated with Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and since October 2006 it has been located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).

It comprises over 350 people, both contracted staff and collaborators, with a mix of researchers from the IMIM and clinical researchers from other MAR Health Park centres.

Its research is structured into five multidisciplinary programmes: cancer; epidemiology and public health; inflammatory and cardiovascular processes; biomedical IT and neuropsychopharmacology.

MARMetabolomics

MarMetabolomics is the metabolomics platform of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona. Our primary objective is to offer our expertise in metabolomics to scientific health-related projects. We firmly believe that combining different knowledge is essential to achieve robust results. We focus our metabolomic analyses on specific questions proposed by clinicians and researchers that have direct contact with patients.

Clinical research unit

La USIC està situada a la planta 13 de l'Àrea Maternoinfantil (AMI) de l'HUVH i posa a disposició de la investigació clínica els següents serveis i espais: 7 consultoris totalment equipats pel seguiment i exploració dels pacients inclosos en estudis clínics, sala per a extraccions o infusió de medicació, un laboratori pel tractament i conservació de mostres clíniques, un arxiu per a la documentació de l’estudi, i espais per a reunions, monitoritzacions i/o auditories; així mateix dona suport d’infermeria de recerca per a les extracció, processament i gestió de mostres biològiques, i altres proves complementàries.

2019-06-018 - Biomarker-CDx - Novel biomarker for precision medicine

We have discovered a new biomarker useful to identify cancer patients with a TGFβ-activated microenvironment in colorectal cancer (CRC) and other tumor types. This biomarker can be used for personalized medicine purposes as follows: i. by selecting those patients able to respond to TGFβ signaling pathway inhibitors; ii. by selecting patients non-responders to immune checkpoint inhibitors (i.e anti-PDL1, anti PD1), due to the presence of a modified microenvironment by high TGFβ levels. The latter set of patients may be selected to prescribe therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors such as anti-PDL1 and anti-PD1 in combination with TGFβ signaling pathway inhibitors. The biomarker can be also used as a prognostic method to better classify the aggressiveness of CRC, particularly according to the recently proposed CMS classification (Consensus Molecular Subtype, Guinney et al., Nature Medicine, 2015), risk of recurrence and metastasis. Thus, the biomarker covers a high unmet medical need which is the devise of better classifiers of cancer stage and aggressiveness.
