2016-01-012 + 2016-01-013 - ONCO-SELEC - Oncoselective mechanism for gene or viral therapy

ONCO-SELEC was a novel strategy to improve the design and selectivity of oncolytic viruses. Tumor-specific transgene expression of viral proteins is modulated by a novel translational regulation mechanism, mediated by a protein expressed only in cancer cells. This protein has been found to be overexpressed only in certain types of cancer (such as pancreatic cancer, glioblastoma tumors, colon and liver cancer), and it has been correlated with stimulation of tumor growth, angiogenesis, and decreased survival. Our technology is able to provide cell-cancer specificity based on that protein overexpression.

Problem: High toxicity of genetic therapies for cancer treatment Solution: The objective is to design genetic therapies with attenuated toxicity and to improve the safety and efficacy of gene and viral therapies. The mechanism of action performs as a dual regulation system: in tumor cells our mechanism acts as an activator and in non-tumor cells as a repressor. Our proprietary technology provides a novel approach that can be combined with existing oncoselective methods and, due to its features, it does not affect vector fitness, oncolytic competence and/or delivery.
