Market Data
This Project relates generally to the field of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and, in particular, to a novel system architecture for economic yet fast and accurate geodesic information provision and/or location determination. The main idea consists of moving apart the GNSS antenna from the baseband processing, thus allowing for a number of new applications and services based on GNSS signal products. This is an approach already adopted by the IT industry, particularly in cellular networks operators, but its applicability to navigation systems still poses some technical challenges. CTTC researchers have demonstrated that those technical difficulties can now be overcome by making use of state-of-the-art optical networks technology, software-defined radio and automated orchestration systems, delivering a virtualized network service that can be deployed in minutes. The proposed concept is inherently scalable, well-aligned to industry standards, and constitutes an enabling technology that can drastically reduce capital and operational expenditures in GNSS Reference Stations and the professional GNSS market, as well as allowing for new services and applications that are just not possible with current technology. The proposed system topology allocates all the baseband processing in a data center, which makes it a convenient solution for GNSS Commercial Services (e.g., Galileo E6), GNSS Authentication, and security-related applications (GPS M code, Galileo PRS), since the encryption module remains on the service provider’s premises. It also allows for innovative pricing strategies, such as the possibility to charge the user per delivered accuracy level, without requiring any change in the user equipment. In order to achieve a commercial exploitation of the proposed concept, CTTC have already submitted an European Patent claim (“METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR VIRTUALIZED GNSS RECEPTION”, PCT application) and they are actively searching for funding in order to raise its marketability. This includes freedom to operate and business analysis reports, the purchase of other third-party licenses or the negotiation of partnerships with external agents, as well as commercial actions getting valuable feedback from potential users.
