2018-04-004 - SUTURE-2 - Mechanical atraumatic microvascular suture

We propose the development of a mechanical device without the need of any of the mentioned above. A two parts device consisting in two rings attached to both end of the vessel to be anastomosed and mechanically attached between them. The innovative system design that would meet this need, without perforation of the vessels and minimizing the traumatic procedures in the vessel.

Sutureless anastomotic devices, generally provides the surgeon a better, reliable, quicker and more reproducible anastomosis, but, until now, all commercialized devices produce an aggression to the anastomosed structure in order to fix them with all the disadvantages associated with the aggression. Our device has been designed to provide all the advantages of the sutureless anastomotic devices but making a big difference as no aggression is needed to use it

The business model for the sutureless anastomotic device would focus on direct B2B sales to hospitals and surgical centers, leveraging partnerships with distributors to scale market reach.

No market studies have been conducted in this field, but knowing how many potential surgeries in which the device could be applied in our center and in Catalonia, it is possible to have an idea of the potential market for the device. In our center, around 500 surgeries are performed each year, 70 of them with potential for the device use. In Catalonia context, there are 6 third level hospitals performing microsurgery, so the use of the suture could be up to 500 each year only considering big plastic surgery departments. What is more, if we consider the potential application to all the tubular structures that need to be anastomosed in all the surgical specialties, numbers can reach high easily.

Target market is hospital institutions where the surgeon will be provided with an easy to apply suture system, thus facilitating the intervention itself, as it decrease stress, time of surgery and, therefore, optimizing resources and minimizing complications. Consequently, this would result in a clear benefit for patients. Considering its foreseen low price, the use of this new anastomosis system will provide a very good cost / benefit ratio and will improve the cost / effectiveness of our health system.

Technology Status

The disruptive element of this project is the design of a sutureless anastomotic device that eliminates the need to perforate vessel structures, thereby reducing the damage associated with traditional techniques. Unlike existing commercial devices that cause trauma to the tissues to fix them, this system provides a safer and less invasive connection, offering all the advantages of sutureless devices but with a significant reduction in surgical trauma

Regulatory Approvals: Extensive and costly FDA and EMA approval processes, requiring clinical trials to prove safety and efficacy. Clinical Adoption: Surgeons may resist adopting new tools without clear evidence of benefit, and they will require training to use the device. Established Competitors: Large medical device companies dominate the market, making it difficult for new entrants to compete. R&D and Manufacturing Costs: High costs for research, development, and compliant manufacturing of precision medical devices.
