The 3D Laboratory, or 3DPTLab, is a technological laboratory within the I3PT Research and Innovation Institute, located in the city of Sabadell, in Catalonia. We are the meeting point between medicine and engineering. The 3D Laboratory was born in 2015 thanks to the initiative of the group’s leader, Dr. Ferran Fillat, specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at Parc Taulí Hospital. Today, the laboratory is made up of a multidisciplinary team made up of doctors from different specialties and biomedical engineers. After many years of research, we are a leading unit in Spain in the use of 3D printing technology to diagnose and treat patients. Our goal is clear: we want to accelerate the inclusion of engineering in hospitals so that we can get the most benefit for our patients. 1. Virtual surgical planning From CT or MRI images of the patient, we analyze the case of 3D optics and propose the optimal surgical correction based on the patient’s biomechanical parameters. 2. Printing of surgical anatomical models We transform the medical image of patients into a 3D printed anatomical model that can be operated on. These models are made of materials that mimic the behavior of tissues and be used as a reference during the intervention. They can also be used to pre-operate the surgery. 3. Design of customized surgical guides From the patient’s virtual surgical planning we design customized surgical instruments that allow the interventions to be performed with total precision and accuracy. These custom instruments, known as surgical guides, are unique to each patient and are manufactured using 3D printing with fully biocompatible materials. 4. Simulation models We design medical simulation models for the training of surgical, interventional and nursing procedures. 5. Tailor-made healthcare product development We help transform an idea into a marketable healthcare product and support companies in the development of tailor-made healthcare products. 6. Training in medical 3D printing We conduct training courses at universities, hospitals and institutions for the dissemination of this new practice in medicine.
