Tissue engineering

The goal of the Tissue Engineering Platform is to provide the CRG, PRBB and external researchers with the latest technologies used in the fields of stem cell biology, stem cell differentiation, organoid formation and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). The Unit is constantly implementing new technologies that are emerging in the previous areas. The tissue engineering platform works in collaboration with the CRG’s Biomolecular Protein and Screening Technologies Unit to offer the CRISPR / Cas9 genome editing technology service. Since 2020, the Tissue Engineering Unit also includes the Internal Histology Service (only for PRBB residents). The Internal Histology Service was created in 2007 to provide the CRG with the histopathological analysis needed to analyze tissues based on research conducted in in vivo models. Studies of tissue developmental biology, homeostasis, and pathology require an in-depth analysis of the morphological and molecular characteristics of tissues and the alterations produced by manipulation. A common tool for these studies is to generate animal models that can recapitulate a specific process or a specific disease. Subsequently, histological and immunohistological analyzes are required to identify and characterize changes in cytoarchitecture and tissue morphology. Immunohistochemistry is an essential tool for determining the location of proteins and RNA at the cellular and tissue level. In this sense, the main objective of the Internal Histology Service is to perform and optimize the processing and histological analysis of the tissue, based on experimental animal models and of human origin. The service also offers advice and training in common histological techniques, in close collaboration with the different groups of the CRG.

The service centralizes and carries out all the histological analyzes of the CRG and works in close association with the Animal Unit of the PRBB. It offers the following services: Preparation and sectioning of samples embedded in paraffin. Preparation and sectioning of frozen samples. Usual histological staining. Complete post-mortem histopathological analysis of mouse models. The service also makes available to researchers the equipment and material needed to perform their own histological preparations, processing, and analysis, as well as experimental planning and training.
