Fundació Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP)The work of the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology Miquel Crusafont (ICP) focuses on: the palaeobiology of mammals in energy-limited ecosystems; research into the Mesozoic era; the study of the Neogene and Quaternary faunas, taking advantage of the wealth of sites in Catalonia; palaeoprimatology; and virtual palaeontology, which provides three-dimensional models and simulations.

The centre places particular emphasis on the dissemination of knowledge about our palaeontological heritage and its significance. Researchers’ findings are therefore on display to the public at the Crusafont Museum in Sabadell, and the centre is helping with the development of a network of local palaeontological interpretation centres around Catalonia.

3D Virtual lab

The 3D Virtual Lab located in the Miquel Crusafont Catalan Institute of Paleontology Museum building, in the center of Sabadell, aims to make a specialized human and technical team available to those organizations that require it in digitizing all kinds of parts. The laboratory is equipped with the main digitization tools, including industrial computed tomography equipment and state-of-the-art scanning equipment using laser and photogrammetric techniques that make it possible to fully cover the needs of any client. The laboratory offers a three-dimensional object printing service. High-resolution rapid prototyping allows any design made by computer to be made, as well as the models resulting from digitization. The piece is printed using a plastic material with a resistance similar to ceramic.

Paleohistology Laboratory

Located in the main ICP building on the UAB campus, the Paleohistology Laboratory supports researchers and by preparing thin sheets for the study of the microscopic characteristics of fossil animal bones and teeth and current, and by preparing the current anatomical elements prior to the preparation of the sheet. These thin sheets can be used in the following fields: Histology, Paleontology, Petrography, Optical Mineralogy and Archeology.

Preparation and conservation laboratory

The ICP has a team of conservator-restorer technicians who have participated in the work of about forty archaeological and paleontological sites, for which they have restored and prepared their materials, as well as have made reproductions for research and exhibitions. and other outreach activities. It is from the Department of Preparation and Conservation of our center that several specialized workshops have been promoted and that they summon the expert community in these techniques. The ICP currently has two conservation-restoration laboratories, one located in the ICP Museum in Sabadell and the largest supporting the ICP research team on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. These facilities are currently one of the largest and most equipped laboratories in Spain.
