UEB – Bioinformatics

The Statistics and Bioinformatics Unit (UEB) was created in 2008 with the aim of promoting the use and development of modern statistical and bioinformatics resources on the research carried out in its environment. Currently, the Statistics and Bioinformatics Unit includes the former Biomedical Research Methodology Support Unit (USMIB) and, within the Scientific and Technical Support Area of the Vall d'Hebron Research Institute, has the mission to offer advice, services and training for clinical and biomedical research. The main objectives of the UEB are: Provide statistical, methodological and bioinformatics support to clinical and biomedical research, mainly in our center but also in the rest of the community. Contribute to the training in statistics and bioinformatics for clinical and biomedical research, through the realization of own courses and the participation in the formal training of the area of the VHIR. Carry out innovation and development activities in the field of statistics and bioinformatics, especially in everything that may lead to an improvement in the procedures and services provided by the Unit.

ARO – University research organization

The Vall D'Hebron Research Institute created in 2014 the University Research Organization (ARO) platform with the aim of helping researchers and sponsors to develop clinical research in Vall of Hebron. The ARO platform offers a complete package on how to manage, from start to finish, the services that are needed to conduct clinical trials and studies. Thanks to its multidisciplinary team, this service can work as a complete contract research organization (CRO) service in clinical trials from phase I to IV within a wide range of possibilities. It also provides advice to the set of researchers and trial sponsors on how to achieve the best experimental design and organizational options to maximize resources. With the collaboration of other VHIR services, the ARO also participates in other aspects that help the development of research projects.

USIC- Clinical research support unit

The Clinical Research Support Unit is located on the 13th floor of the Maternal and Child Health Area, at the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, and consists of two centrally coordinated areas: The Health Department: provides healthcare support for the development of clinical research in Vall d'Hebron, and offers medical offices to users. The Management Area: its main function is to provide support in terms of ethics, methodology, regulations and management in conducting clinical research within the Vall d'Hebron, and is part of the SCReN Platform (Spanish Network of 'Clinical Research) of the Institute of Health Carlos III.

Biobank VHIR

The Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Biobank (HUVH Biobank) is a research support unit that hosts biological samples of human origin for biomedical research purposes in compliance with current legislation, with the aim of making available the scientific community the biological material necessary for research in optimal conditions that ensure the competitiveness and excellence of research. Biomedical research is a key tool for improving knowledge of diseases, as well as for the development of methods for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases that improve the quality and life expectancy of human beings. Therefore, in recent years there has been a growing interest in having biological samples of human origin of various pathologies.

ESU -Experimental surgery unit

The general aim of the Experimental Surgery Unit (ESU) is to facilitate scientific and technical research in the area of biomedicine, especially translational research, given that experimentation on large animals is generally a level closer to human application. It is internationally accredited by the AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care).

UAT – Metabolomics

It offers the research community a metabolomics platform that includes mass spectrometry and chromatography equipment. These techniques, combined with others such as NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), allow to obtain quantitative and qualitative data of metabolites, drugs and small peptides that are present in biological substrates such as serum, plasma, urine, cell tissues or cell cultures. UAT – Microscopy

The microscopy platform is dedicated to the preparation of samples (sectioning) and subsequent observation (both fixed cells / tissues and living samples), through the use of clear field and / or fluorescence microscopy ("wide field" and confocal). UAT – Cytometry platforms

Flow cytometry is based on the study of optical parameters derived from the interaction of an excitation light source (laser) with particles (cells, subcellular fractions). In this way, structural information (size, complexity) can be collected and, from the fluorescent labeling of different epitopes, multiparametric information can be obtained from each individual cell of the general population. Based on these properties, cytometry techniques make it possible to analyze and classify a considerable number of cells, with relative ease and speed, with objectivity and high sensitivity, to obtain qualitative and quantitative measurements of complex subcellular populations.
