Fundació de Recerca Clínic Barcelona-Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (FRCB-IDIBAPS)The Clinic Foundation for Biomedical Research-August Pi Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (FRCB-IDIBAPS) is dedicated to biomedical research of excellence and addresses the most common diseases in our environment. Its mission is translational research, that is to say, it seeks to ensure that the questions that arise at the patient’s bedside have an answer in the laboratory and that the advances made in the laboratory are quickly transferred to patients.

Around 2,000 professionals work there, organized into a hundred multidisciplinary groups. With more than 1,500 original articles published per year, it is one of the main biomedical research centres in Spain and has a clear international vocation.

The FRCB-IDIBAPS is the result of the integration, in 2023, of the Clinical Foundation for Biomedical Research (FCRB), created in 1989, and the consortium Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), created in 1996. It is a non-profit foundation, and The Government of Catalonia, the Clinic Barcelona hospital and the University of Barcelona are represented on its board of trustees.

Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu (IRSJD)The Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (IRSJD) is a research and innovation centre in the field of biomedicine. It was created in 2015 through a collaboration agreement between Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, the University of Barcelona (UB), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC), Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu and the Sant Joan de Déu Research Foundation.

The IRSJD’s mission is to research health problems in paediatric medicine and how they affect human development, in both physical and mental health, with the aim of improving the health and quality of life of the population.

L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain

Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL)The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) was founded in 2004 and conducts both basic and clinical research with the aim of improving people’s quality of life.

Located in Hospitalet de Llobregat, to the south of Barcelona, its research activity focusses on cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine.

It is a Generalitat de Catalunya CERCA centre and was one of the first five Spanish research centres to receive accreditation from the Carlos III Health Institute. In 2015, the European Commission also presented IDIBELL with the “HR Excellence in Research” award, identifying the institute as a provider and advocate of a stimulating research working environment.

In addition, in 2020 it integrated the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMR[B]) and is now the headquarters of the Program for Clinical Translation of Regenerative Medicine of Catalonia (P-CMR[C]).

Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Girona Dr. Josep Trueta (IDIBGI)The Girona Biomedical Research Institute Dr. Josep Trueta (IDIBGI) carries out translational research to improve health and care of people. IDIBGI is organised into 23 research groups distributed in five scientific areas (Cardiovascular and Respiratory, Metabolism and Inflammation, Neurosciences, Oncohematology and Mental Health) that bring together more than 400 people, including health professionals and basic researchers, in the region of Girona.

The IDIBGI is a public foundation made up of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) Girona, the Institute of Health Care (IAS), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) Girona, and the University of Girona. IDIBGI is a CERCA centre (Research Centres of Catalonia) since 2005.

Castelldefels, Spain

Institut d’Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC)The Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC) carries out research from space (and with some terrestrial instruments) into the cosmos, including studies of the Earth. Its aim is to increase basic human knowledge and develop new technologies that put Catalonia at the cutting edge of international research. An additional, and no less important, function is its role in transmitting this knowledge to both specialist audiences and the general public.

Its lines of research focus on earth sciences, astrophysics and cosmology, fundamental physics and astrodynamics.

The IEEC is structured as a confederation of four institutes: the Institute of Space Sciences (CSIC), the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICC-UB), the Aeronautics and Space Research Center (CRAE-UPC) and the Special Space Research Centre (UAB).

Fundació Institut Català de Recerca en Patrimoni Cultural (ICRPC)Catalonia’s rich cultural heritage can be exploited in a wide variety of ways, not least as a major element of the country’s attractiveness as a tourist destination. The number of people using this resource is steadily increasing. This is why the field of cultural heritage is being given greater priority, making it essential to have accurate knowledge of its key features.

The purpose of the Catalan Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (ICRPC) is to promote high-quality research organised into two main priority areas: “heritagisation” processes and the use of cultural heritage. The ICRPC hopes to increase the number of people working in cultural heritage, while becoming a support and reference centre for the many agents working with our cultural heritage.

Bellaterra, Spain

Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE)The Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE) conducts research at the frontiers of fundamental physics, namely in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The centre has two divisions: experimental and theoretical research.

The research activities of the theoretical division focus on the standard model and theories that go beyond it, in particle astrophysics and cosmology. The experimental division carries out experiments with particle accelerators in Europe (such as at CERN), the USA, Japan and the Canary Islands (using gamma-ray telescopes such as MAGIC), and in Chile, with cosmological observations.

A medical physics group is meanwhile developing digital imaging techniques for diagnostic purposes.

The IFAE is also a training centre, recognised as a university institute affiliated with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), enabling it to offer masters’ programmes and supervise doctoral theses.

Institut Català de Recerca de l’Aigua (ICRA)Water is a key resourcer for ecosystems and society. In the Mediterranean, it is a scarce resource, and its quality and management are essential. The Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) conducts research and transfer on all aspects related to the analysis, improvement and management of water, especially those associated with ecosystems and human activities.

ICRA research is transferred to public and private bodies related to the use and management of water, in terms of quantity, quality and technological procedures for its improvement.

IGTPThe Health Sciences Research Institute of the Germans Trias i Pujol Foundation (IGTP) has a long history in conducting scientific activity in connection with Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol. This effort was rewarded in 2008 when it received accreditation as a health research institute by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII).

The centre’s mission is the discovery, preservation, dissemination and promotion of multidisciplinary, translational knowledge and the development of technology of excellence in biomedical sciences, as part of a continuing process of qualitative improvement, through a dynamic, efficient and effective organisation.

As a benchmark research centre, IGTP’s goals are to ensure that the psychophysical health and quality of life of the population is in the best state possible, through the transfer of the knowledge, technology and innovation generated by the research programmes in clinical and therapeutic practice (translationality).

Sabadell, Spain

Fundació Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP)The work of the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology Miquel Crusafont (ICP) focuses on: the palaeobiology of mammals in energy-limited ecosystems; research into the Mesozoic era; the study of the Neogene and Quaternary faunas, taking advantage of the wealth of sites in Catalonia; palaeoprimatology; and virtual palaeontology, which provides three-dimensional models and simulations.

The centre places particular emphasis on the dissemination of knowledge about our palaeontological heritage and its significance. Researchers’ findings are therefore on display to the public at the Crusafont Museum in Sabadell, and the centre is helping with the development of a network of local palaeontological interpretation centres around Catalonia.

Cerdanyola del Vallès, Spain

Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2)Nanoscience covers a very broad range of sectors, which in recent years have benefited from the strategic orientation of research and technology policies in Catalonia.

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) carries out cutting-edge research in nanobiology and nanobiomedicine. More specifically, its work prioritises the physical and chemical aspects of nanoscience, i.e. the synthesis, manufacture, uses and study of the properties and applications of nanometric materials. Subsequent applications of this work meet social demand in areas such as metrology, instrumentation, energy and the environment.

The ICN2 maintains its commitment to the university by taking an active part in the teaching of students and entrepreneurs and giving masters and doctorate courses.

Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Catalunya Sud (IRB CatSud)The Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) aims to identify and promote the major research areas in the biomedical field in El Camp de Tarragona and Les Terres de l’Ebre, strengthening close ties between basic, translational and epidemiological and health service research.

The institute is modelled as a networking centre, which strives for efficiency in the use of resources and efficacy in results. The institute’s headquarters gathers together research conducted at the institutions it comprises (hospitals, universities and primary healthcare centres) and is a key structure for developing the integrated biomedical research model.

Its main lines of research focus on nutrition and metabolism, oncology and haematology, neuroscience and mental health, and health and the environment.
