Intubation is a major risk factor associated to ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in patients admitted to the ICU, with an incidence from 2-16 episodes per 1,000 days of mechanical ventilation and an associated mortality that ranges from 3-17%. The endotracheal tubes used for intubation are made of polyvinyl chloride, a thermoplastic that can act as a reservoir for pathogens by providing a surface to which they can adhere and form biofilms. Biofilms develop rapidly after intubation with antibiotic-tolerant structures that can be detected within 24 hours, being one of the most important variables in the pathogenesis of VAP. To date, there is no strategy to prevent or treat these biofilm-associated infections in endotracheal tubes.
