Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of legal blindness in developed countries in the population over 50 years of age. In Spain, more than 750,000 people suffer from AMD and more than 3 million are at risk of suffering from it. Current uses of light and pollution together with the aging of the population will increase the incidence while there is nothing to prevent it, no treatment and no hope for sufferers. Currently there are only proven treatments to alleviate the effects of the most advanced stages of AMD, specifically for the exudative phase where choroidal neovascularization appears and seriously compromises the vision of patients. However, there is no treatment for the dry form of the disease, characterized by massive atrophy of the retina, nor for the early stages when symptoms are not evident but retinal tissue is profoundly altered by oxidative stress and inflammation. It is precisely in this initial phase of the disease where it is most interesting to find a way to slow down the progression of the pathology, since the neural tissue has not yet been significantly compromised and, therefore, patients have not yet shown symptoms of vision loss. As it is a chronic degenerative disease of slow progression mainly related to aging, when we think about the design of a preventive drug, it can only be considered as a non-invasive, non-toxic and easily administered periodical treatment that allows its use for many years without adverse effects. The development of nanomedicine is a key aspect specifically contemplated within the framework established by the National Health System. The development of an eye drop enriched with antioxidant NPs aims to apply a new and necessary therapeutic strategy, based on the use of NPs capable of interacting on a biological scale with the main etiopathogenic phenomena of the disease. The proposal is proposed as a preventive treatment that can be applied from the very early stages of the disease or even before suffering it, with the aim of protecting the eye from inflammation and oxidative stress caused by external agents related to our daily life. As the therapy is in the form of eye drops, it is easy to apply, patients do not need doctors and it allows continuous treatment without adverse effects.

In Spain, >750,000 people suffer from AMD and >3 million are at risk of developing AMD. The global AMD market accounted for revenues of over $5 billion in 2015, and is expected to grow at up to 8% annually during 2016-2022. According to the 2019 WHO Eye Health Report, AMD is expected to grow 1.2-fold between 2020 (195.6 million) and 2030 (243.3 million). And there is no effective treatment. Only anti-vascularization growth factor injections in the neovascular (wet) form.
