In 2002, the Oncology Plan of Catalonia promoted the creation of a network of tumor banks in Catalonia that would serve to provide sufficient samples for cancer research and to obtain useful results in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. One of the most important resources for the development of these studies are tumor tissues and other samples (serum, cell cultures) from patients affected by this disease as well as healthy control tissues. From these types of samples it is possible to obtain DNA, RNA, proteins and other products useful for research.

A strategic regional alliance to strengthen biomedical research. The biomedical research institutes of the provinces of Tarragona, Girona and Lleida have a very similar nature and, therefore, in 2017 they joined forces to seek synergies in their research priorities, increase efficiency between the centers and promote their work internationally. Together with its partner universities, leading hospitals and other health centers, the Institutes aim to become European and international benchmarks.
