NFL – Nano Fabrication Lab

The NanoFabrication Lab (NFL) at ICFO is a transversal facility devoted to the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured photonic devices. The laboratory premises, comprising a 200 m2 ISO6/ISO7 cleanroom and other controlled environment spaces, include a complete set of state of the art nanofabrication tools and techniques for a wide range of optical applications, from biosensing to optical communications, and spanning a broad range of materials, such as polymers, semiconductors, metals or crystals. The laboratory also includes tools for advanced materials and device characterization.

NCL – Nano-Characterization Lab

The Nano-Characterization Lab facility offers state-of-the-art services for the characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructures developed at ICFO, within the various groups as well as in the nanofabrication facility (NFL). NCL’s unique equipment facilities provides multiple characterization techniques for imaging optoelectronic materials, nanophotonic structures and devices thereof on multiple length-scales using photons, electrons, mechanical forces as well as x-rays as probes.

AEL – Advanced Engineering Lab

According to the researchers' need to build new experimental research structures and components, the Advanced Engineering Laboratory (AEL) strives to bring researchers closer to the latest technologies in electronics and precision mechanical engineering. AEL is dedicated to supporting the innovation and development carried out in ICFO's research laboratories. The installation occupies about 200 m2, which offers the latest generation tools for electronic design, assembly and characterization, as well as for micromechanical engineering. It includes the Mechanics and Electronics Workshops

BCL - Basic chemistry laboratory

The Chemistry Laboratory (BCL) was created to provide ICFO researchers with a place to conduct chemical experiments in a safe environment. The laboratory has three fume hoods, as well as glassware, equipment and services to prepare solutions and carry out chemical reactions. Researchers who have participated in a basic security seminar can use this self-service lab.

BBL - Basic biology laboratory

The Biology Lab (BBL) is a cross-cutting facility available to all eligible ICFO research groups and external users with the goal of providing scientific assistance and technical support that covers their needs in handling, preparation, storage and maintenance of biological samples. The facility has been implemented to meet biosafety requirements to conduct experiments with biological samples up to biosafety level 2. The facility is prepared with equipment and tools to support users in their needs in terms of classical and state-of-the-art techniques of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, as well as in vitro and in vivo practices that include mammalian cell and tissue culture, microorganism culture, C. elegans and other animal models. The installation of the BBL puts a great deal of effort into training programs for the users of the facility. All new users of the facility are systematically trained to comply with all biosafety standards, as well as to properly carry out laboratory protocols and to use the specific equipment needed to successfully develop their research projects. Collaboration The BBL offers scientific advice and practical training in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry techniques, as well as technical support to carry out basic research activities with live animals. The BBL is open to external collaborations with industry, research centers and universities

SLN - Super resolution Light Microscopy and nanoscopy facility

The Super-resolution Light Microscopy & Nanoscopy (SLN) Research Facility at ICFO is equipped with front-end microscopy techniques that are able to operate a step beyond the commercial state of the art.The SLN research team performs continuous R&D in most of the advanced light microscopy techniques and provide access and training to all types of users in the forefront of microscopy for the most demanding biomedical applications. The SLN is open to external collaborations with industry, hospitals, research centers and Universities.The SLN Facility at ICFO provides:Access to external researchers and collaborators to the variety of state-of-the-art microscopy and super resolution techniques.Training, through short-term and mid-term, hands-on courses tailored to the needs of specific users with a variety of relevant backgrounds.Image analysis and quantification tools customized for the different techniques.
