CREB – Biomechanics laboratory

The Biomechanical Engineering Research Group (BIOMEC) conducts research and development of technology for the assistance and rehabilitation of human movement. The main activity of BIOMEC is the application in the clinic to improve the rehabilitation of patients with neuromuscular disorders. From the basic research of the group arose in 2018 the spin-off of the UPC ABLE Human Motion, which develops an exoskeleton of lower extremity for spinal cord injuries, devised in the group together with the universities of A Coruña and Extremadura. The group has a Biomechanics Laboratory as well as a Mechatronics Workshop for the development and prototyping of mobility assistance systems.

IBUB – Seahorse Oxidative metabolism analysis equipment

The Agilent Seahorse analyzer allows in vitro measurement of the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and the extracellular acidification rate (ECAR). The OCR and ECAR rates are key indicators of mitochondrial respiration and glycolysis as is the ATP production rate, and together these measurements provide a systems-level view of cellular metabolic function.

3D Planning and simulation unit (3D4H, IRSJD Innovation group)

SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital planned for the first time a complex oncological surgery intervention with three-dimensional printing for a paediatric patient in 2013. The number of surgical specialities that use this technology to plan or guide interventions has multiplied since then. At present, nine of our surgical specialities use this type of techniques to treat our patients (Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Maxillofacial Surgery, General and Thoracic Plastic Surgery, Odontology and Orthodontics, Oncology, Foetal Medicine, Neurology and Cardiology).In 2015, Sant Joan de Déu-Barcelona Children’s Hospital created its 3D Unit, called 3D for Health (3D4H, https://www.sjdhospitalbarcelona.org/ca/unitat-3d), formed by a multidisciplinary team of engineers, radiologists, surgeons, financial experts and simulation experts. The Unit’s primary mission is to provide support for the planning of complex surgeries with virtual or print 3D technologies. It also takes part in research projects, providing relevant knowledge as required, and in simulation and training, generating advanced custom simulation models.The Unit has obtained the requisite licence from the Government of Catalonia as a custom manufacturer of medical devices. It also forms part of the Biobanks and Biomodels Platform of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII).

IRSJD Biochemistry laboratory – Amino acid analysis

Our goal is to offer this platform for targeted analysis of amino acids in all types of biological specimens (plasma, urine, dry blood, cerebrospinal fluid and fibroblasts in patients, liver, retina, heart, brain, macrophages, other types of cell cultures, etc.)
