Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL)The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) was founded in 2004 and conducts both basic and clinical research with the aim of improving people’s quality of life.

Located in Hospitalet de Llobregat, to the south of Barcelona, its research activity focusses on cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine.

It is a Generalitat de Catalunya CERCA centre and was one of the first five Spanish research centres to receive accreditation from the Carlos III Health Institute. In 2015, the European Commission also presented IDIBELL with the “HR Excellence in Research” award, identifying the institute as a provider and advocate of a stimulating research working environment.

In addition, in 2020 it integrated the Center of Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMR[B]) and is now the headquarters of the Program for Clinical Translation of Regenerative Medicine of Catalonia (P-CMR[C]).

Molecular interaction platform

The Molecular Interactions Platform provides scientific-technological support to the scientific community in the field of molecular interactions and biomarker discovery using several approaches. First, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) allows real-time monitoring of any type of molecular interactions (protein-protein, protein-drugs, protein-vesicles, protein-RNA, …) and performs high-precision measurements of affinity and kinetic constants, binding specificity, isotyping and screening of potential medications/drugs. Next, Luminex technology allows the detection of up to fifty different biomarkers at once in biological samples and fluids using the technology of magnetic beads. In addition, metabolism and bioenergetics, driving cellular functions such as cell signalling, proliferation, or cell fate, can be measured with the Seahorse in real-time in living cells. Mitochondrial respiration, glycolysis, ATP rate oxidation and fatty acid oxidation can be measured with high precision. Recently we have acquired a high resolution spatial transcriptomics and proteomics platform,CosMx (Nanostring). CosMx SMI enables rapid quantification and visualization of up to 6,000 RNA and 64 validated protein analytes at single cell resolution in biopsies and tissues samples.Our mission is to provide an integrated support, from experimental design, optimization of assay conditions, experiment execution to data analysis and reporting. Our state-of-the art technology together with the large experience and know-how in biomedical research and protein science are at the service of both internal and external researchers.
